Monsoon, pictured racing in 2023, is an International Six Metre, designed and built by Maxwell Blake in Singapore. He had lived and worked there most of his life, was the founding Commodore of the Royal Singapore Yacht Club and Monsoon was his retirement present to himself – shipped to Cowes in 1924.
Maxwell Blake is known as the designer of Gypsy Moth II, Francis Chichester’s first boat and the Deben 4 Tonner. She was launched with a bamboo gaff which was quickly replaced when he realised that all the other 6mR had converted to Bermudan rig. As an early Second Rule boat she has more of the characteristics of earlier designs and was later relegated to the Q-Class – a handicap class for retired 6mR.
On Monday 8 July the evening commences with the Weyborne Pursuit Race Prize-giving & Welcome Drinks Reception for all wristband holders following the 18.00 Skippers Briefing in the London Room. During the reception, Monsoon, now owned by David Elliot, will be alongside Trinity Landing on Monday evening to celebrate her Centenary - do please come by.
We are very grateful to Weyborne Estate for their sponsorship and looking forward to enjoying their celebrated Weyborne Estate Family Reserve. Will you be one of the lucky winners taking some home?
We have several options for you on Monday:
To get you fuelled up ready for racing on Monday, a Competitor Brunch is available in the Ground Floor Dining Room at RLYC. There is no need to book in advance, but if you are able to it helps our chefs.
With regards to Aprés Racing, a Carvery at Island Sailing Club has been reintroduced to the programme. Chef will be carving Island Roast Sirloin of Beef and Island Roast Loin of Pork served with all the trimmings, followed by Chocolate Chip Bread & Butter Pudding or Cheese & Biscuits. The first 30 booking in will be seated in the Conservatory.
The Italian Buffet in the Rooftop Marquee at Island Sailing Club usually sells out and looks like it will again this year as there are already only 12 places left.
The three course Taste of the Sea menu served on the Balcony at the Royal London is a popular choice too. Again, there are now only 12 places left.
A reminder that final bookings for Curry Night at RORC are required by 17.00 TODAY. Why not stay on after the Isle of Wight Distillery Prize-giving and Drinks Reception and enjoy the newly extended and renovated clubhouse? We hear there may be jugs of Pimms and Dark & Stormys to ease the curry down.
You can browse and book all our social events here online. Today is the last day that the full range of events is available to book as individual events will be taken off sale when we pass their bookings required by dates. The countdown has begun!
We’re looking forward to seeing you!
