Notice of Race & Entry

Following the publication of the Notice of Race, entries are rolling in for Charles Stanley Cowes Classics Week. The NOR is here on the website where you will also find all the necessary event information and documentation along with the full entry list.

If you have previously registered with the website, your login details will remain the same. If you have forgotten your password select the “Forgotten password” link on the login screen. If you need reminding of your email login details, please contact the office.

Provided that no personal information or details of your boat have changed since last year, you will find the entry process really quick. If you need to amend any details, select the “View and edit your details” button on the login screen.

If you have problems when entering, either re-read the “Guide to Entering” which is available from the foot of the Home page, or contact the office.

The late entry fee becomes payable on entries made after Friday 17 June, so don’t delay.

12mr TJP1115Competing Classes

We are expecting at least one 12 metre, 8 metres, 6 metres and our own Darings (glass 5.5s). Four classes of metre boats in the same regatta is rare these days and will make for a great spectacle on the water.

We will also be welcoming a fleet of Vintage Dragons for the first time, alongside the regular classic dayboat classes of Solent Sunbeams, Swallows, Flying Fifteens, Loch Longs, Bembridge One Designs and Squibs.

Depending upon fleet numbers, these classes may share a start, but class results and prizes will be awarded. Following discussions with Class Captains, we anticipate that these classes will have a varied race programme in their 8 race series which will include windward/leeward courses and round the cans finishing towards Cowes at the end of the day, but our first priority will remain as providing quality racing in the prevailing weather conditions.

The XOD fleets from Itchenor, Cowes, Hamble, Lymington, Parkstone and Yarmouth will again converge on Cowes to be the largest class at the regatta and we expect over 60 boats to be on the start line, competing for the Haines Boatyard Trophy won by Paul Woodman’s Ibex in 2015.

International Tempest Class World Championships

We are delighted to be hosting the International Tempest Class World Championships as part of Cowes Classics Week in 2016. This will have its own dedicated race circuit with a schedule comprising a Practice Race on Sunday 10 July, followed by a 9 race Championship series taking place from Monday 11 through to Friday 15 July.

For further information on the World Championships, refer to the dedicated website at www.tempestworlds.com

Classic Yachts

We expect to split the large and small yachts into two fleets again, Red and Blue, based on KLR Handicap. In a new initiative we have invited all Sparkman & Stephens designed Swans to compete, and these will join previous entrants including Quailo III, Charm of Rhu and Temeraire and the Nicholson 32s in the Red fleet, whilst the Blue fleet will comprise the Twisters, Folkboats, SCODs, Contessa 26s and our first ever Stella entrant.

GafferOld Gaffers

With 4 smaller Old Gaffers already entered, we will again provide separate racing for two fleets. The larger boats will this year be joined by the famous Peggy Bawn, a unique sailing yacht originally launched in 1894 and recently rebuilt and restored by her current owner Hal Sisk. Hal will be bringing Peggy Bawn from Dublin along with the 2008 launched gentleman’s motor boat Molly Bân which will be his luxury live-aboard for the week.

Spirit of Tradition

Following our invitation to “Spirit of” yachts last year, we have introduced a new class for these bespoke yachts which could include Tofinous, Rustlers, and other modern boats built along traditional lines.

Moorings

We recommend that visiting boats moor on the swinging moorings specially laid by Cowes Harbour Commissioners for the summer events, or in the nominated event centre at Shepards Wharf Marina.

The deadline for booking a swinging mooring was at the end of May. If you require one of these moorings and have not yet booked, please contact the office to see if you can still be accommodated.

The deadline for booking a Shepards Wharf Marina berth is Friday 24 June. Complete the form on the CCW event website to benefit from the event discount.

Missisle LogoMiss Isle

Following the great interest generated last year by the Isle of Wight Youth Trust, this year’s event charity is the Miss Isle School of Sip & Puff Sailing – a unique sailing and training experience offered by a newly formed charity on the Isle of Wight.

The School is specifically for physically disabled individuals who want to go sailing but aren’t able to sail a conventional boat. All that’s needed is good breath control to handle using a straw to sail a boat.

The School is the brainchild of Natasha Lambert. Natasha is still a teenager but has sailed around the Isle of Wight, crossed the Channel, sailed over five hundred miles to Wales, climbed the highest peak in southern Britain and sailed from Cowes to London and then completed a walk from St Katharine Docks to the Bank of England and back.

Natasha undertakes these challenges to test herself and to raise funds for charity. To date she has raised over £53,000.

These activities would be remarkable for any teenager but Natasha has cerebral palsy, uses a wheelchair and has little control over her movements. Her sailing is by mouth in a specially adapted yacht and her walks are completed in a special walker which she propels herself.

For further inspirational information about Natasha and her new charity, visit www.missisle.org.uk

Charles Stanley Cowes Classics Week participants are invited to make an online donation whilst entering or booking socials on the event website.

Social Programme

One of the key elements of Cowes Classics Week, and which uniquely sets the event apart from other Regattas, is the full social programme where the community of classic boat sailors comes together after racing and develop lasting friendships.

As usual we will visit the clubs in Cowes who do so much to provide the event with volunteers and on the water resources, and who willingly open their doors to welcome competitors during the week.

All of the social events are available to book on the website. A discount of 10% is available on all social events booked before 17:00 on Friday 8 July. We will not make refunds for tickets no longer required, but will set up an exchange system for competitors during the regatta.

We are delighted that Charles Stanley’s exceptional headline sponsorship is in place again this year. Their contribution behind the scenes is too vast to report here, but Charles Stanley do invite all competitors to join them at the event’s Opening Reception at the Royal London Yacht Club on Monday.

As always, there will be Charles Stanley employees competing at the event. We see significant business synergies with the owners and crews of the classic boats attending the regatta and we invite competitors to speak with the Charles Stanley representatives to find out more about their Investment Management proposition.
