Boats can be launched from the mainland and sailed to the island, or trailed to the Isle of Wight (see Getting to Cowes for ferry options) and launched in Cowes.

We have four recommended mainland boatyards that are fully conversant with metre and classic keelboats and can, if needed, provide towing facilities. The yards are within 5 nm of sheltered sailing to Cowes.

We have also provided details of the two major launch facilities in West Cowes, although other smaller facilities are available, including self-launch options.

The Elephant Boatyard

Mainland - Launch and sail to Cowes

Named after the “Elephant”, Nelson’s flagship at the Battle of Copenhagen in 1786 which was built in Bursledon, this yard is on the site of the old shipyards of Bursledon oon the Hamble river, and just 5 minutes from Junction 8 of the M27. A number of local metre and classic boats are kept at the yard.
